چکیده

A 24-year-old regularly transfused patient with b-thalassemia major presented with a lateral neck mass. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an enhanced mass 2.3 3 2 3 2.2 cm in the right parotid gland (panels A-B, arrows) with expansion and coarsening of the bony parts (panel A, arrowheads). Differential diagnosis included salivary gland tumors, metastases, hematomas, hemangioma, and extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). Fine-needle aspiration of the mass showed normal bone marrow elements (panel C), and EMH was suggested. Pathology showed a soft, dark red, clot-like mass (panel D) that was confirmed as nodal EMH (panels E-F).

Paravertebral Extramedullary Hematopoiesis In A Pregnant Thalassemic Patient: A Case Report

Spinal cord compression due to extramedullary hematopoiesis is a well-described and rare syndrome encountered in several hematological disorders including β-thalassemia. Hereby, a 37-year old pregnant woman with intermediate β -thalassemia with paraparesis and lower limb hypoesthesia was presented. MRI s...

Extramedullary Hematopoiesis in a Patient with Transfusion Dependent Beta-Thalassemia Presenting with Cord Compression

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a physiological compensatory phenomenon occurring in many hemolytic anemias including thalassemia. Besides transfusion, radiotherapy, surgery or a combination of these modalities, hydroxyurea (HU) as an optimal treatment has been described occasionally. We described a case of beta-thalassemia major who has been on regular blood transfusion and developed EMH...

Paranasal sinus involvement in thalassemia major: CT demonstration.

Beta thalassemia is a blood dyscrasia caused by defective synthesis of the beta chain of hemoglobin. This causes severe anemia due to ineffective erythropoiesis and peripheral hemolysis of the defective red cells . Marked expansion of active marrow spaces and extramedullary hematopoiesis result. Classic radiographic findings of thalassemia, in particular the hair-on-end appearance in the skull ...

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is the production of hematopoietic precursors outside the bone marrow cavity, and it causes mass effects according to its localization. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or computed tomography (CT) scans are used most commonly to detect EMH foci. We report herein a case with thalassemia intermedia causing paravertebral mass associated with EMH detected by C...

Compressive Optic Neuropathy in Thalassemia: A Rare Ophthalmic Consequence of Extramedullary Hematopoiesis

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a compensatory physiological proliferation of hematopoietic elements outside the bone marrow as a result of insufficient bone marrow erythropoiesis. It is found in various hematologic disorders (e.g., as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, myelofibrosis) especially those with chronic anemias. It can affect in any organs, thus producing numerous complications. ...
